What is a Christkindlmarkt?
European Christkindlmarkt or Christmas Markets are full of beautiful hand-made crafts, delicious treats and oh so enticing smells that will make you dream of them for years. If you haven’t had the opportunity to visit one of these markets in Europe, look for a local one to attend, like the Salt Lake City Christkindlmarkt held annually at This is The Place State Park.
Red and White striped canopies mark the roof of each shop where hand-crafted wares from Germany and other European nations wait for shoppers to purchase them.
Step into the big white barn to warm up and you will find beautiful intricately hand-carved clocks, ornaments, nutcrackers, as well as German Christmas Pyramid’s also known as Weihnachtspyramide.
Want to take a horse drawn carriage ride? They have those as well!
Let your children pet the donkeys, goats and camel at the petting zoo.
Stop and buy some European pastries, chocolates, caramels or hot cocoa.
Have you tried a Poffertjes or aebelskivers? These Dutch mini pancakes are the perfect warm treat, made hot and served up fresh.
Oozing with melted butter, a touch of fruit jam and sprinkled with powdered sugar they are to die for! Once you have your tummy filled, you will want to stop by to hear the Alp horns or the German choir singing Christmas carols.
Be sure to stop into the old rock building to warm up for a spell and purchase a traditional men’s cap with feather, hand-made straw ornaments- only $1 a piece, or a German stein.
End your day watching the Christkindlmarkt parade.
And if you are lucky, you will catch a beautiful sunset over the valley as you leave.
